Message from Rabbi Shull

Haverim,
Finally, we are opening the sanctuary for in-person services after more than a year's absence. I believe the words Chadeysh Yameinu K'kedem (“Renew our days as of old”) should guide us. This is the last verse of Lamentations (Eicha) read on the Ninth of Av/ Tisha B'AV*. Eicha is a mournful reflection on the destruction of the First Temple. This last line echoes a hope...yes, that we want to "go back to normal" but not just "go back," rather to chadesh (“make new”); we want to make those old days new and I would say "improved."  It's not enough to "go back to normal"; we should improve on the old normal.  This is our chance to be better than we were before.

And so some values to guide us as we reopen:
1) Dan et kol Adam l'chaf z'choot - (“Judge every person favorably”). We have lived through a period of a great deal of harsh judgement. Let's work very hard to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

2) V'havtah l'ray'echa ka'mocha - (“Love your fellow Jew as yourself”). The JCV is a congregation where all Jews are welcome. While we should be proud of our upbringing and traditions, we must always seek to be open-minded and welcoming. As a congregation, we need to be clear about our values and standards, while always being open to learning from others as we grow.

3) Ivdu et HaShem b'simcha - (“Worship God in joy”). We must always strive to pray to God with enthusiasm and with a deep sense of gratitude.

4) Dah l'fnai Mee atah omeyd - (“Know before whom you stand”). Let us always remember that in our sanctuary, in particular, we stand before God. This means that we comport ourselves with dignity and respect, always treating others with kindness and respect... for God is taking account of our actions.

Bshalom,
Ben

*Join us at the JCV on Saturday night, July 17/the Ninth of Av/Tisha B’AV 5781, for an evening of study, prayer, and reflection from 7:30pm to 9:00pm.  See poster below.

Thank you for Your Continued Support of the JCV

We have survived.
We have flourished.
So many have stepped up in this year of the pandemic.
We found new ways to do programming and invested in different uses of technology.
Now that we have returned to in-person services and events, we will bring with us the lessons we learned and our new ways of thinking.
But most of all, we will appreciate our ability to gather and connect in person.

Great things are planned for 2021 - 2022, including our 40th anniversary.
We encourage you to join us again, as a member of the JCV.
